In July 2015, Islamabad’s development authority, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) demolished the city’s largest informal settlement (“katchi abadi”) in sector I-11 which provided housing for over 2000 working-class families and was set to destroy 43 more informal settlements. In response, the Awami Workers Party and the displaced residents of I-11 filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the CDA and the government. The petition demanded an end to the CDA’s policy of destroying poor people’s homes in Islamabad, the resettlement of the displaced I-11 residents, and for the government to fulfill its constitutional requirement to provide low-income housing throughout the country.
This interactive timeline above tracks the developments in the Supreme Court case, and the CDA’s repeated failure or refusal to fulfill the court’s order in the this regard.
